Cognitive Severe Classroom
Belvidere High School
The Cognitive Severe class is currently located at Warren Hills Regional High School. The purpose of our program is to provide the least restrictive learning environment while allowing an opportunity for involvement with the general high school population. Our students, aged 15-21, are given academic instruction by means of one-on-one and/or small group settings. They also receive art and music lessons twice a week. Instruction is determined by the student’s IEP which follows the New Jersey Guidelines for Core Curriculum Content Standards.
Our program incorporates sensory activities in daily lessons in using a variety of textures, smells, tastes, listening therapy and visual stimuli. Our students also use a computer that is adapted to meet their needs whether with a Big Mac or Head switch. Speech, Occupational and Physical Therapies are given as determined by the students’ IEP.
Students also participate in many school activities, such as assemblies and pep rallies.
Our class enjoys many extra-curricular activities outside of the classroom environment to enhance peer and adult interactions. Some of these activities include swimming , bowling, shopping at Shop Rite, baseball games, lunch outings, trips to the local mall and theatre visits.
